New Budget blow to Rachel Reeves as disability charity says it may be forced to scrap key services

  • A leading disability charity has warned it may be forced to stop running dozens of services as a result of Rachel Reeves ' tax hikes in the Budget. Mencap said it could be forced to stop providing at least 60 of its services as a result of the so-called 'charity tax', the rise in National Insurance paid by employers.

Rachel Reeves, the shadow chancellor, has criticized the government's handling of the economy, particularly highlighting the impact of the Autumn Statement on public services. In her speech at a Mencap event, she pointed out that the government's decision to extend the freeze on local housing allowance and the lack of funding for public services like social care are detrimental to vulnerable groups. Reeves argued that these policies are not only failing to support those in need but are also exacerbating economic inequality. She emphasized Labour's commitment to economic growth and stability, promising that under a Labour government, there would be a focus on ensuring public services are adequately funded to support all citizens, especially those with disabilities.
