Des Moines Public Schools (DMPS) has initiated a comprehensive plan to reorganize its district, which includes the potential closure of several schools. This decision comes in response to declining enrollment, aging infrastructure, and the need for more efficient use of resources. The plan, known as "Right-Sizing," aims to consolidate schools to better align with current student numbers, improve educational equity, and address facility conditions. The district has identified 14 schools for possible closure or consolidation, with the goal of reducing the number of buildings from 63 to 52 over the next few years. This move is expected to save costs, enhance educational offerings, and provide better facilities for students. Community engagement sessions are planned to gather input from parents, students, and staff before final decisions are made.
