  • The United Soccer League (USL) announced on Wednesday that a supermajority of club owners voted to implement a promotion and relegation system in the league in the coming years.

The United Soccer League (USL) has introduced a new promotion and relegation system for its men's professional leagues, approved by the USL Board of Governors. This system will start in the 2024 season, allowing teams in the USL Championship and USL League One to move between divisions based on their performance. The top team in League One will be promoted to the Championship, while the bottom team in the Championship will be relegated to League One. This initiative aims to enhance competition and provide a clear pathway for clubs to progress, mirroring systems used in European soccer leagues. The system will be implemented over a three-year period, with the first promotion and relegation occurring after the 2023 season.
