NHTSA closes preliminary investigation into General Motors' Cruise robotaxis

  • U.S. automobile safety regulators are closing their preliminary investigation into General Motors' Cruise robotaxis without taking further action

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has concluded its preliminary investigation into General Motors' Cruise robotaxis, deciding not to pursue further action at this time. The investigation, which began in December, focused on two incidents involving Cruise vehicles where pedestrians were injured. One incident involved a pedestrian being dragged by a Cruise vehicle after being hit by another car, and the other was a collision with a pedestrian in a crosswalk. NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation reviewed the automated driving system (ADS) of Cruise vehicles, examining how they detect and respond to pedestrians. Despite the closure of the investigation, NHTSA emphasized that they will continue to monitor the safety of automated driving systems and could reopen the investigation if new information or incidents arise. Cruise has been cooperative, providing data and updates on their system improvements.
