East Hampton Public Schools are buzzing with excitement following a significant announcement: they’ve been awarded a $1.6 million grant from the Connecticut Department of Education's (CT DOE) Early Childhood Innovation Fund. This substantial investment will fuel a multi-faceted program aimed at bolstering early literacy skills in kindergarten and first grade, addressing learning gaps exacerbated by the pandemic and setting students on a path for long-term academic success.

The grant, officially announced earlier this week, represents a crucial lifeline for the district’s efforts to ensure all children enter second grade equipped with foundational reading abilities. The program, dubbed "Launch into Literacy," will focus on three key areas: enhanced teacher training, implementation of evidence-based literacy interventions, and increased access to high-quality instructional materials.

A major component of “Launch into Literacy” is a commitment to professional development for teachers. Recognizing that effective instruction is the cornerstone of any successful program, the district plans to provide extensive training in the Science of Reading – a research-backed approach emphasizing phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
