New Pershing Middle School Construction Begins in Springfield
Locales: Missouri, UNITED STATES

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - March 11, 2026 - Springfield Public Schools (SPS) is poised to revolutionize middle school education in the city with the official commencement of construction on the new Pershing Middle School. The project, years in the making, signifies a significant investment in the future of Springfield's students and a commitment to providing modern learning environments.
The decision to rebuild Pershing, rather than renovate the existing structure, was solidified after a comprehensive feasibility study highlighted insurmountable infrastructure challenges and limitations of the current 1958 building. Decades of use have taken a toll, with aging plumbing, electrical systems, and HVAC units reaching the end of their lifespan. While attempts at patching and temporary fixes were made, district officials determined that a new build was the most fiscally responsible and educationally sound solution.
"This isn't just about replacing bricks and mortar," stated Superintendent Dr. Angela Davis at a press conference held earlier today. "It's about creating a learning space that supports 21st-century teaching methods and prepares our students for success in a rapidly evolving world. The old Pershing served our community well, but it was simply no longer equipped to meet the needs of today's learners."
The approved plan calls for a state-of-the-art facility constructed on the existing Pershing site, minimizing disruption to the neighborhood. The architectural design prioritizes flexible learning spaces, collaborative areas, and dedicated zones for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education. Early renderings showcase a departure from traditional classroom layouts, incorporating movable walls and technology-rich environments designed to foster creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. The new school will also boast an expanded library/media center, a modern gymnasium, and updated athletic facilities.
Funding for the approximately $45 million project comes from a $98 million bond measure overwhelmingly approved by Springfield voters in April 2023. The bond addressed several critical needs within the district, with Pershing Middle School representing the largest single investment. School board members praised the community's foresight and dedication to public education.
"The voters clearly understood the urgency of this situation," said school board president Sarah Miller. "They recognized that investing in our schools is investing in our children, and we are incredibly grateful for their support."
Construction is slated to begin immediately, with a target completion date of August 2027. During the construction period, Pershing students will be temporarily relocated to the former Kickapoo High School building, ensuring continuity of education with minimal disruption. The district has outlined a detailed transition plan to facilitate a smooth move and maintain a high-quality learning experience for all students.
Beyond the physical improvements, the new Pershing Middle School aims to implement innovative programs and teaching strategies. District administrators are exploring partnerships with local businesses and organizations to provide real-world learning opportunities and career pathways for students. Emphasis will be placed on personalized learning, catering to the unique needs and learning styles of each individual student. The new facility will also accommodate increased enrollment projections, addressing anticipated growth in the school's attendance area.
This project aligns with a broader trend in school district modernization across the nation. Many districts are recognizing that aging infrastructure can hinder educational progress and are prioritizing investments in facilities that support innovative teaching practices and student success. The Pershing project serves as a model for other districts looking to revitalize their middle school programs.
Local residents have expressed enthusiastic support for the project. "It's exciting to see the district taking such a proactive approach to education," commented long-time Springfield resident, David Chen. "A modern middle school will not only benefit our students but also enhance the overall quality of life in our community."
The official groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for March 28th, 2026, and will be open to the public.
