US senator travels to El Salvador over wrongly deported migrant

  • Democratic US Senator Chris Van Hollen flew to El Salvador on Wednesday to press for the release of a US resident mistakenly deported to the Central American country.A legal US resident, Abrego Garcia was protected by a 2019 court order determining that he could not be deported to El Salvador, but he was sent there around a month ago.

U.S. Senator Katie Britt traveled to El Salvador to meet with President Nayib Bukele, focusing on discussing strategies to address illegal immigration and enhance security cooperation between the two nations. During her visit, Senator Britt praised Bukele's efforts in combating gang violence and reducing homicide rates, which she believes could serve as a model for other countries. The discussions also covered the importance of economic development and job creation in El Salvador to curb migration to the U.S., with Britt expressing interest in fostering stronger bilateral ties to support these initiatives.
