Memorial Day travel to set new record as drivers benefit from lower gas prices

More than 45 million people will take trips over the Memorial Day holiday weekend this year, marking the highest number in two decades, AAA projected.
Memorial Day travel is expected to set a new record with an estimated 43.8 million Americans traveling at least 50 miles from home, surpassing the previous record set in 2005, according to AAA. The increase in travel is attributed to lower gas prices, which are averaging around $3.57 per gallon, significantly less than last year's $4.59 per gallon. This drop in gas prices is providing relief to drivers and boosting travel, with road trips expected to be the most popular mode of travel, accounting for 38.4 million travelers. Additionally, air travel is also seeing a surge, with 3.51 million people expected to fly, marking the highest number since 2005. Other modes of transportation, such as buses, trains, and cruises, are expected to see 1.9 million travelers, the highest since 2000.
