OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - February 12th, 2026 - Central Oklahoma commuters will experience a revamped public transportation system today as One Transit, the region's primary provider, rolls out significant service changes. The adjustments, effective immediately, are a direct response to fluctuating ridership, a dedicated push for efficiency, and a commitment to integrating community feedback. Beyond the immediately implemented changes, One Transit officials hint at a longer-term vision for a more integrated and sustainable transportation network.

Sarah Miller, Director of Operations for One Transit, explained the impetus behind the overhaul. "Central Oklahoma is a growing region with evolving transportation needs. Our goal isn't simply to maintain the status quo, but to proactively adapt and improve our services. These adjustments represent a crucial step in creating a public transit system that is reliable, accessible, and truly serves the needs of all residents."

The most noticeable changes involve a strategic route consolidation, primarily impacting routes 12, 27, and 41. This isn't simply a reduction in service, Miller clarified. "We've analyzed the overlaps and redundancies in these routes and are reallocating resources to areas where demand is highest. The consolidation allows us to increase frequency on core routes and offer a more streamlined experience for passengers." Riders previously relying on the now-combined routes are being directed to the One Transit website ([ www.onetransitok.org ]) and mobile app for detailed information on alternative routes and connections. One Transit is running a campaign on social media directing users to a route-finding tool on their website, and are partnering with local businesses to distribute printed maps.

Alongside route consolidation, schedule adjustments are being implemented across the network. These aren't sweeping changes, but rather fine-tuned alterations to departure times, designed to coincide with peak commuting hours and reduce passenger wait times. Utilizing real-time ridership data, One Transit has identified key bottlenecks and is proactively addressing them. This granular approach reflects a shift towards data-driven decision-making within the organization.

Perhaps the most impactful change for some will be the enhancements to paratransit services. Recognizing the critical need for accessible transportation for individuals with disabilities, One Transit is expanding its paratransit offerings. This includes not only an expansion of the service area, but also simplified reservation procedures. The expansion addresses long-standing complaints from disability advocates who have called for more reliable and wider-reaching paratransit options. Miller stated that One Transit has worked closely with local advocacy groups to ensure the changes meet the needs of the community. The new system allows for online reservation requests and automated confirmations, eliminating the previous reliance on phone calls that often led to long wait times.

Adding a completely new element to the network is Route 72, an express route directly connecting key residential areas with the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum. Launched during peak commuting hours, the route aims to provide a convenient and efficient transportation option for visitors and employees of the Memorial. This addition is seen as both a practical transportation solution and a gesture of support for a significant cultural landmark.

However, these changes are just the first phase of a broader modernization plan. One Transit is actively exploring partnerships with ride-sharing services to offer "first-mile/last-mile" solutions, bridging the gap between transit stops and riders' final destinations. Pilot programs utilizing electric buses are also underway, demonstrating a commitment to environmental sustainability. The organization is also seeking federal funding to expand light rail infrastructure further into the suburbs, offering a high-capacity alternative to individual vehicle use.

"We envision a future where public transportation is seamless, integrated, and a preferred choice for all residents of central Oklahoma," Miller concluded. "These service changes are a stepping stone towards that vision. We are committed to continuous improvement and welcome ongoing feedback from our riders."
