The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has started enforcing the REAL ID Act at airport security checkpoints across the United States, requiring travelers to present either a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or another acceptable form of identification to board domestic flights. This enforcement, which began on May 7, 2025, marks the final phase of a long-delayed initiative aimed at enhancing security by setting federal standards for state-issued identification. Travelers without a REAL ID can use alternative forms of ID such as a passport or military ID. The implementation of REAL ID has been postponed multiple times due to various reasons including state readiness and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the TSA is now fully enforcing the new identification requirements to ensure a smoother transition for air travelers.
