Lisbon residents call for vote on restricting vacation rentals

Residents of Lisbon are advocating for a referendum to impose restrictions on short-term rentals like Airbnb, aiming to address the housing crisis exacerbated by tourism. The city has seen a significant increase in short-term rentals, which has led to a decrease in available long-term housing options, pushing up rental prices and making it difficult for locals to afford to live in the city center. The proposed measure would limit the number of short-term rental licenses and require owners to live in the properties they rent out, in an effort to preserve residential neighborhoods and ensure housing availability for permanent residents.
