Los Angeles, CA - February 27th, 2026 - The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) continues its search for the driver responsible for a fatal hit-and-run collision that occurred in South Los Angeles early Saturday morning. This incident, taking place on February 21st, 2026, at approximately 4:40 a.m. in the 1100 block of East Imperial Highway, has reignited concerns over a recent uptick in similar incidents across the city, particularly within the South Los Angeles community.

The victim has been identified as 38-year-old Marcus Bell, a resident of Watts. According to preliminary reports, Bell was walking along East Imperial Highway when he was struck by a dark-colored SUV. First responders arrived to find Bell with fatal injuries and pronounced him dead at the scene. The vehicle involved immediately fled the area, leaving no indication of attempting to render aid.

"The callousness of leaving a fellow human being to die on the side of the road is reprehensible," stated Captain Ramona Valdez of the LAPD's South Bureau during a press conference this morning. "We are dedicating significant resources to this investigation and are determined to bring the perpetrator to justice."

This incident isn't isolated. Data released by the LAPD earlier this month shows a 15% increase in hit-and-run collisions citywide compared to the same period last year. South Los Angeles has experienced a disproportionately higher increase - a staggering 22% - prompting community leaders to demand increased police presence and improved pedestrian safety measures.

Several factors are believed to be contributing to this worrying trend. Some experts point to increased traffic congestion as a primary driver, leading to more opportunities for collisions. Others suggest that economic hardship and a lack of access to adequate vehicle insurance may be incentivizing drivers to flee the scene of an accident, fearing significant financial repercussions. Furthermore, the rise in distracted driving, fueled by the increasing use of mobile devices, is also suspected of playing a role.

The LAPD is currently reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and residences in an attempt to identify the vehicle involved. They are specifically looking for a dark-colored SUV, potentially a Ford Explorer or Chevrolet Tahoe, with possible front-end damage. Investigators are also appealing to the public for any information related to the incident.

"Even the smallest detail could be crucial," Captain Valdez emphasized. "Did anyone see a vehicle matching this description speeding away from the area? Did anyone notice any damage to a dark-colored SUV in the days leading up to the incident? Any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could help us solve this case."

Community activists are organizing a vigil for Marcus Bell this Sunday evening at the intersection of East Imperial Highway and Raymond Avenue. They are also planning a town hall meeting next week to discuss potential solutions to address the growing hit-and-run problem.

"We need to send a clear message that this behavior will not be tolerated," said Maria Sanchez, a local community organizer. "We need safer streets, better lighting, and more accountability for drivers who put the lives of pedestrians at risk." The LAPD is asking anyone with information regarding the hit-and-run on East Imperial Highway to contact the LAPD Tipster line at 1-800-LAPD-TIPS or visit their website at [ www.lapdonline.org ]. All tips will be kept confidential. The investigation is ongoing.
