  The Trump administration is considering expanding its travel ban to 36 countries, including 25 in Africa, citing national security concerns and visa overstay rates.

On January 31, 2020, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced a travel ban affecting Nigeria and five other countries—Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, Sudan, and Tanzania—effective from February 21, 2020, citing security concerns and inadequate information sharing on terrorism and public safety. This ban restricted the issuance of immigrant and diversity visas but did not affect non-immigrant visas such as those for business or tourism. Concurrently, Trump reached a "phase one" trade deal with China, leading to the removal of tariffs on $120 billion worth of Chinese goods, including items like smart watches and Bluetooth headphones, as part of efforts to de-escalate trade tensions between the two nations.
