Solo Travel Surges: 82% of Americans Intrigued
Locale: UNITED STATES

Wednesday, March 11th, 2026 - A new wave is sweeping through the travel industry: the desire for solo exploration. A recent OnePoll survey reveals that a remarkable 82% of Americans are intrigued by the prospect of embarking on a journey alone, signaling a significant shift in travel preferences. While the allure of independence and self-discovery is strong, genuine hesitation remains, with safety, financial concerns, and the potential for loneliness cited as key barriers by a substantial portion of potential solo adventurers.
This isn't a fleeting trend. Solo travel has steadily gained traction over the past decade, fueled by a societal push for personal growth and experiential tourism. The pandemic, paradoxically, may have accelerated this trend. After extended periods of lockdown and restricted social interaction, many individuals are re-evaluating their priorities and seeking opportunities for self-reliance and meaningful experiences. The desire to reconnect with oneself, free from the constraints of group dynamics, is a powerful motivator.
The OnePoll data paints a clear picture of the anxieties surrounding solo travel. Nearly half (44%) of those interested express concerns about personal safety. This is understandable given global events and the vulnerability that can come with navigating unfamiliar environments alone. However, experts suggest many of these fears are addressable with proactive planning. Travel expert Brooke Porter Katz emphasizes the importance of diligent research, sharing travel plans with trusted contacts, utilizing safety apps, and being aware of one's surroundings. Furthermore, increased offerings of solo-traveler specific tours and accommodations contribute to a safer experience.
Cost is another significant hurdle for 39% of potential solo travelers. Traditionally, travel is often more expensive for individuals traveling alone, as costs like accommodation and certain tours aren't easily split. However, the industry is responding. We are seeing a surge in 'solo traveler' rates offered by hotels and cruise lines, designed to eliminate or reduce single supplements. Budget-friendly accommodation options like hostels and guesthouses are also becoming increasingly popular, catering specifically to independent travelers. The advent of travel hacking - utilizing rewards points and finding discounted fares - further empowers solo adventurers to make their budgets stretch further.
The fear of loneliness, affecting 32% of respondents, is perhaps the most emotionally complex barrier. While solitude can be a welcome respite, prolonged isolation isn't appealing to everyone. The key to overcoming this lies in intentional connection. Joining group tours, participating in local activities, utilizing social travel platforms to connect with other travelers, and being open to meeting new people can significantly mitigate feelings of loneliness. The popularity of "flashpacking" - a blend of backpacking and luxury travel - also contributes, fostering a community among independent travelers who often seek out shared experiences.
The survey also highlighted a notable gender difference: 88% of women expressed interest in solo travel compared to 75% of men. This could reflect a greater societal expectation for women to prioritize safety and a more cautious approach to independent exploration. However, it also points to a rising number of women actively reclaiming their independence through travel, challenging traditional norms and embracing empowering experiences.
Popular destinations revealed in the survey - Europe, national parks, and beach locations - offer a diverse range of experiences appealing to solo travelers. Europe provides a wealth of cultural attractions, well-developed infrastructure, and easy access to transportation. National parks offer opportunities for immersion in nature and self-reflection. Beach destinations provide a relaxing and rejuvenating escape. However, increasingly we're seeing a broadening of destinations. Countries like Costa Rica, Iceland, and New Zealand are becoming highly sought-after by solo adventurers seeking adventure and unique experiences.
The rise of the solo traveler isn't just a trend; it's a reflection of evolving values and priorities. By addressing legitimate concerns about safety, cost, and loneliness, the travel industry can unlock the full potential of this growing market, empowering individuals to embrace independent exploration and create truly unforgettable experiences.
