NEW DELHI, March 16, 2026 - Lemon Tree Hotels Ltd (LTH.NS) is accelerating its international expansion plans, driven by a sustained surge in outbound travel from India and a demonstrable global demand for accessible and authentic Indian hospitality. Originally announcing intentions in early 2026, the company is now detailing a phased rollout targeting key tourist destinations across Southeast Asia, the Maldives, and the Middle East, with an ambitious long-term vision for property ownership.

Lemon Tree, renowned for its strategically positioned budget-friendly and mid-range hotels within India, believes it's uniquely positioned to cater to the evolving needs of the burgeoning Indian traveler. Data released last week by the Ministry of Tourism indicates a 27% year-on-year increase in Indian outbound tourism for the first two months of 2026, significantly exceeding pre-pandemic levels. This growth isn't solely driven by leisure travel; business travel and 'VFR' (Visiting Friends and Relatives) trips are also experiencing substantial increases.

"We've been closely monitoring the travel trends and the increasingly sophisticated demands of the Indian traveler," stated Vikram Puri, Lemon Tree Hotels' Chief Strategy Officer, in an exclusive interview. "They're no longer simply seeking affordable accommodation; they want a comfortable, reliable experience that resonates with their cultural preferences. We believe our established brand ethos of value, cleanliness, and friendly service translates exceptionally well to these international markets."

The initial phase of Lemon Tree's expansion will prioritize management contracts and franchise agreements. This allows for a rapid, lower-risk entry into new markets, leveraging existing infrastructure and local expertise. The company has already entered into preliminary discussions with potential partners in Thailand, Dubai, and the Maldives, focusing on locations with high Indian tourist footfall. However, Mr. Puri indicated a clear intention to transition towards property ownership in strategically vital locations over the next 5-7 years.

"The franchise model allows us to test the waters and build brand recognition. Once we've established a solid foothold, we'll actively pursue opportunities to acquire or develop properties, giving us greater control over the guest experience and long-term profitability," Puri explained.

Lemon Tree's move reflects a broader trend of Indian companies increasingly looking outward. A robust domestic economy, coupled with a rapidly expanding middle class and rising disposable incomes, is fueling not only domestic tourism but also a significant outflow of travelers seeking international experiences. This is compounded by government initiatives promoting 'Make in India' and a growing sense of national pride, encouraging Indian brands to establish a global presence. Several other Indian hospitality groups, including the Taj Hotels and ITC Hotels, have also announced ambitious international expansion plans over the past year.

The company's current portfolio in India comprises over 80 hotels with nearly 4,500 rooms, catering to a diverse range of travelers. Lemon Tree has successfully carved a niche for itself by focusing on consistency and offering a streamlined, technology-driven guest experience. The company plans to leverage its existing digital infrastructure and loyalty program, "Lemon Tree Smiles," to build a strong customer base in its new international markets.

Analysts predict a favorable outlook for Lemon Tree's international venture. "The demand for mid-range, reliable accommodation in Southeast Asia and the Middle East is consistently high, particularly from price-sensitive travelers," noted Anya Sharma, a hospitality analyst at Global Research Group. "Lemon Tree's brand positioning and operational efficiency give it a distinct advantage over some of the more established international chains. The key will be adapting to local nuances and ensuring culturally appropriate service delivery."

Lemon Tree is also exploring potential partnerships with local tour operators and travel agencies to package its hotel offerings with flight and sightseeing options, further appealing to the Indian tourist market. The company expects its first international hotel to open its doors in Q1 2027, with plans to launch at least five additional properties across its target regions within the next two years. This represents a significant investment in the company's future and a bold statement of intent to become a leading global hospitality brand.
