Baldwin County Schools Superintendent Announces Retirement
WKRGLocale: UNITED STATES

BAYOU LA BATRE, Ala. - March 20, 2026 - After a distinguished 14-year tenure as Superintendent of Baldwin County Schools, Eddie Campbell announced his retirement today, effective June 30, 2026. Campbell's leadership has overseen a period of substantial expansion and advancement for the district, shaping the educational landscape of one of Alabama's fastest-growing counties.
Campbell's journey with Baldwin County Schools extends beyond his time as Superintendent. He previously served as Assistant Superintendent, building a deep understanding of the district's operations and the needs of its students, educators, and community. This experience proved invaluable during his leadership, allowing him to navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by Baldwin County's rapid population growth.
The announcement comes at a pivotal moment for the district. Baldwin County has experienced a boom in population over the past decade, particularly along the eastern shore and in areas surrounding Mobile. This growth has presented both opportunities and difficulties for the school system - opportunities to expand programs and facilities, but also challenges related to overcrowding, resource allocation, and maintaining a high quality of education across all schools.
Under Campbell's guidance, Baldwin County Schools have consistently ranked among the top districts in Alabama. While standardized test scores are often cited as a measure of success, Campbell has repeatedly emphasized a more holistic approach to education, focusing on student well-being, extracurricular activities, and preparing students for college and careers. The district has invested heavily in programs like STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education, dual enrollment opportunities with local universities, and career technical training programs designed to meet the demands of the regional workforce.
"This was not an easy decision," Campbell stated in a press release issued earlier today. "Serving the students, teachers, and families of Baldwin County has been the honor of my life. I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together, and I am confident that the district is well-positioned for continued success."
The Baldwin County School Board acknowledged Campbell's dedication and immediately initiated the search for his successor. Board President Dr. Sandra Miller stated, "Eddie Campbell has been a transformative leader for our district. His vision, commitment, and collaborative spirit will be deeply missed. We are committed to finding a Superintendent who shares his dedication to excellence and can build upon the strong foundation he has established."
The Board plans a comprehensive search process, involving input from parents, teachers, administrators, and community stakeholders. Public forums and online surveys are expected to be part of the engagement strategy, allowing community members to voice their priorities for the future of Baldwin County Schools. The search is expected to take several months, with the goal of having a new Superintendent in place before Campbell's retirement takes effect.
One of the key issues the new Superintendent will face is managing continued growth. Several new schools have been built in recent years, but the pace of development shows no signs of slowing down. Planning for future facilities and ensuring equitable distribution of resources will be crucial. Furthermore, the new leader will need to address the evolving needs of a diverse student population, including students with special needs, English language learners, and students from low-income families.
Another challenge will be retaining and recruiting qualified teachers and staff. Competition for educators is fierce, and Baldwin County Schools must offer competitive salaries, benefits, and professional development opportunities to attract and retain top talent. The district has already implemented initiatives like mentorship programs and leadership academies to support teachers' growth and development.
Campbell's retirement marks the end of an era for Baldwin County Schools, but it also presents an opportunity for renewal and innovation. The community eagerly awaits the selection of a new leader who can carry forward Campbell's legacy of growth, community engagement, and a commitment to providing a high-quality education for all students.
