  • The national average gas prices are the lowest they've been over Memorial Day weekend since 2021.

Memorial Day weekend is expected to see a significant increase in travel, with AAA predicting that 42.3 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home, marking a 7% rise from last year and approaching pre-pandemic levels. The majority of these travelers, about 37.1 million, will drive to their destinations, while 3.4 million are expected to fly, and 1.8 million will use other modes of transportation. The surge in travel is attributed to pent-up demand and lower gas prices compared to last year, with the national average for a gallon of regular gas at $3.53. Additionally, air travel is expected to exceed 2019 levels, with a 5.4% increase in air travelers compared to last year. To manage the expected traffic, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation has suspended construction projects and lifted weight limits on state highways over the holiday weekend.
