Indian travel firms report drop in Turkey bookings over Pakistan support

  • Indians are cancelling holidays in popular resorts in Turkey and Azerbaijan after the countries supported Pakistan during its recent conflict with New Delhi, two booking firms said. Ties between India and Pakistan nosedived after a deadly attack in Indian ashmir last month that New Delhi said was backed by Islamabad. Pakistan denied involvement, but intense fighting broke out when India struck what it said were "terrorist camps" in Pakistan last week.

Indian travel companies are experiencing a significant decline in bookings to the Maldives following controversial remarks made by Maldivian ministers about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, leading to a surge in the #BoycottMaldives campaign on social media. The backlash has resulted in a reported 40% drop in bookings, with EaseMyTrip, a major online travel platform, suspending all flight bookings to the Maldives in solidarity with India. This situation has been exacerbated by the timing, as it coincides with the peak booking season for holidays to the Maldives, traditionally a favored destination for Indian tourists. In response, there has been a notable increase in interest in domestic travel within India, as well as to destinations like Sri Lanka and Mauritius, as travelers seek alternatives to the Maldives.
