Shrewsbury Pools Face Closure Amid Budget Cuts
Locale: UNITED KINGDOM

Shrewsbury, Shropshire - March 29th, 2026 - Shrewsbury's cherished public swimming facilities, The Quarry and Bearstone swimming pools, are facing an uncertain future as Shropshire Council grapples with significant budgetary pressures. Proposed cuts to leisure services threaten the very existence of these vital community hubs, sparking widespread concern and a growing wave of local opposition.
The Council, tasked with finding GBP23 million in savings over the next two years, has identified leisure services as a key area for reduction. While officials maintain these are difficult but necessary decisions, residents argue that closing the pools would have a devastating impact on public health, community wellbeing, and accessibility to essential physical activity.
The Shrewsbury Swimming Forum, a vocal advocate for maintaining the pools, has been at the forefront of the fight. "These pools aren't just about swimming laps," explained Forum spokesperson, Eleanor Vance. "They're about rehabilitation for those recovering from injury, providing crucial lessons for children learning to swim - a life skill - offering social interaction for seniors, and simply being a safe, accessible space for families to spend time together. To lose that would be catastrophic."
The situation is complex. Funding for the pools derives from a combination of Shropshire Council allocations, user fees, and occasionally, external grants. However, rising operational costs - including energy bills, maintenance, and lifeguard salaries - are putting immense strain on the existing budget. The Council argues that dwindling usage in certain off-peak hours contributes to the financial burden, and that savings must be made to prioritize essential services like social care and education.
But the community disputes the claim of consistently low usage. "We've seen increased demand in recent years, particularly from families and older adults," says local resident and regular swimmer, David Miller. "The pools are consistently busy during peak times, and even off-peak, they're well-used by dedicated swimmers and aqua aerobics groups." Miller also points to the potential for increased demand as the town continues to grow, making access to affordable fitness facilities even more crucial.
The Shrewsbury Swimming Forum isn't simply protesting the cuts; it's actively exploring alternative funding solutions. They've launched a petition which, as of today, has garnered over 2,000 signatures, and are preparing to present it to the Shropshire Council next month. Beyond the petition, the Forum is investigating potential sponsorship opportunities with local businesses, grant applications to charitable organizations focused on health and wellbeing, and the possibility of establishing a 'Friends of the Pools' fundraising group.
Furthermore, the Forum is advocating for a comprehensive review of how leisure services are funded and managed. They suggest exploring options such as a social enterprise model, where the pools are run by a community interest company, or a collaborative partnership between the Council, local businesses, and the community.
The potential closure isn't limited to inconvenience; it raises serious equity concerns. Bearstone pool, in particular, serves a significant population from lower-income areas, providing affordable access to exercise that many wouldn't otherwise have. Closing it would exacerbate health inequalities within the town. The Quarry pool, while more central and attracting a broader range of users, also plays a critical role in providing school swimming lessons - a mandatory part of the national curriculum.
Next week's public meeting, scheduled for Tuesday evening at the Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery, is expected to draw a large crowd. Council representatives have been invited to attend and address the concerns of the community. "We want a constructive dialogue," says Vance. "We understand the Council is facing tough decisions, but we believe there are viable alternatives to closing our pools. We need them to listen to the community and work with us to find a solution that ensures these vital facilities remain open for generations to come."
The fate of Shrewsbury's swimming pools hangs in the balance, highlighting a wider national trend of austerity measures impacting local leisure facilities. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether community activism and innovative funding solutions can save these beloved and essential public spaces.
