  • Thursday morning, dozens of veterans, law enforcement, and community volunteers escorted the traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall to its temporary home at the Northeast Florida Fairgrounds in Callahan.

The Traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, a half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., made a stop in West Dundee, Illinois, as part of its tour across the United States. The wall, which lists the names of the 58,281 American service members who died in the Vietnam War, was set up at Randall Oaks Park and was open to the public for free from August 31 to September 3, 2023. The exhibit not only serves as a tribute to those who lost their lives but also aims to educate visitors about the Vietnam War. Volunteers, including Vietnam veterans, were present to share their experiences and help visitors locate the names of loved ones on the wall. The event also featured various ceremonies, including a candlelight vigil and a ceremony to honor local Vietnam veterans, emphasizing the community's ongoing commitment to remembering and honoring the sacrifices made during the war.
