The head of the Catholic Church in Ireland and the Irish president are among those heading to Italy.

Leaders from the Irish church and state, including President Michael D. Higgins and Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, are traveling to Rome to attend a canonization ceremony where Pope Francis will declare two Irish-born nuns, Nano Nagle and Catherine McCauley, as saints. The delegation's visit also includes a private audience with Pope Francis, highlighting the strong ties between Ireland and the Vatican.
