Major U.S. airlines are reducing their flight schedules and revising their profit outlooks due to reduced travel demand as sentiment about the economy sours. National travel reporter Dayvee Sutton says airlines will likely start raising fares as flexibility lessens and discusses how summer travel is changing as economic uncertainty grows.

Summer travelers in 2023 are encountering higher travel costs across various sectors due to a surge in demand, inflation, and other economic factors. Airfares have increased by 20% to 30% compared to the previous year, with domestic flights averaging $306 round trip and international flights to Europe at about $800 round trip. Hotel rates have also risen, with an average nightly rate of $152 in the U.S., up 10% from last year. Car rental prices have seen a slight decrease but remain high at an average of $47 per day. Additionally, travelers are facing higher costs for activities and dining, with some destinations like Hawaii and Florida seeing particularly sharp increases. Despite these higher prices, travel demand remains strong, driven by a desire to make up for lost time during the pandemic, leading experts to predict a busy and expensive summer travel season.
