Real ID Deadline Approaching: What Travelers Need to Know
Locale: UNITED STATES

What Does This Mean for Travelers?
Beginning May 7, 2026, travelers aged 18 and older will need to present a Real ID-compliant driver's license or identification card, or another acceptable form of identification, to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities - including federal courthouses, and secure areas of federal buildings. Without compliant identification, passengers will not be permitted to pass through TSA checkpoints.
Acceptable alternatives to a Real ID include a valid U.S. passport, a U.S. Department of Defense ID, a Permanent Resident Card, a Trusted Traveler Program card (like Global Entry or TSA PreCheck), or an Enhanced Driver's License (available in some states).
What's Required to Get a Real ID?
The application process for a Real ID isn't overly complicated, but requires more documentation than a standard driver's license renewal. Generally, applicants must provide:
- Proof of Identity: A certified copy of your birth certificate, a U.S. passport, or a Permanent Resident Card.
- Proof of Social Security Number: Your Social Security card, a W-2 form, or a pay stub.
- Proof of Residency: Two documents verifying your current address, such as a utility bill, bank statement, or lease agreement. These documents must be current and show your name and address.
Specific requirements can vary by state, so it's crucial to check your state's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website for the most up-to-date information. Some states allow you to begin the application process online, pre-filling forms and gathering required documents before visiting a DMV office. This can significantly streamline the process.
Why the Repeated Delays?
The initial deadline for Real ID compliance was 2008. It's been pushed back repeatedly due to a combination of factors. The initial implementation faced resistance from states concerned about the cost of upgrading their systems. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread DMV closures and staffing shortages, exacerbating existing backlogs. The DHS has also acknowledged the need to improve public awareness and ensure that all citizens have access to the necessary documentation.
This latest extension is designed to give states more time to address these ongoing issues and provide citizens with sufficient time to obtain compliant identification. However, experts warn that procrastinating could lead to significant travel disruptions as the May 7, 2026 deadline approaches. The DHS continues to urge citizens to begin the application process as soon as possible, rather than waiting until the last minute.
