NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. government advised American travelers age 60 and older not get a chikungunya vaccine as it investigates possible side effects.
U.S. health officials have advised that older adults planning to travel to areas where chikungunya virus is circulating should not get the newly approved vaccine due to a lack of data on its safety and effectiveness in this age group. The vaccine, Ixchiq, was approved in November for individuals 18 and older, but the CDC recommends it only for those aged 18 to 64 who will be visiting regions with ongoing chikungunya outbreaks. This recommendation comes after a study showed that older adults experienced more severe side effects from the vaccine, including a higher incidence of headache, fatigue, and muscle pain. The CDC emphasizes that the decision to vaccinate should be made after a thorough discussion with a healthcare provider, weighing the risks of the vaccine against the potential exposure to the virus.
