NEW YORK/LONDON (Reuters) -Airfares from Europe to the United States have dropped to rates not seen since before the pandemic, as travelers from Western Europe lead a pullback in travel to the U.S. that is expected to continue through at least July. Overseas arrivals to the United States fell 2.8% in May from a year ago, according to preliminary data from the U.S. National Tourism Office within the U.S. Department of Commerce. from Western Europe fell 4.4% in May although from Eastern Europe rose 4.6% in the same period.
Transatlantic airfares have significantly decreased, with round-trip economy flights from Western Europe to the U.S. East Coast dropping to an average of $472, a 37% reduction from the previous year, according to travel analysis firm Hopper. This decline is attributed to a combination of factors including a slow recovery in business travel, increased airline capacity, and a strong U.S. dollar. The lower fares are particularly beneficial for leisure travelers, as business travel remains sluggish. Additionally, Hopper predicts that airfares will continue to be low through the fall, with potential increases not expected until the winter holiday season.
