San Diego Airport Hit by Major Security Delays

San Diego's peak hours are currently defined as 5:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, coinciding with the busiest departure and arrival windows. The airport is implementing temporary measures to address the immediate problem, including redeploying staff from less critical areas and utilizing overtime hours. However, these are considered short-term solutions. Longer-term strategies include accelerating recruitment efforts, streamlining training programs, and investing in advanced screening technologies.

"We understand the inconvenience these delays are causing, and we are committed to improving the passenger experience," stated Daniels. "We are working closely with the TSA to explore all available options. We're also encouraging passengers to utilize the TSA PreCheck program where eligible; this can significantly reduce wait times."

TSA PreCheck allows pre-approved, low-risk travelers to bypass some of the standard screening procedures, expediting their passage through security. Enrollment in the program requires a background check and a fee, but many frequent travelers find the convenience and time savings worthwhile. The TSA is also exploring the implementation of more automated screening lanes, which can process passengers more efficiently.

The increased wait times at SAN and other airports are prompting calls for greater federal investment in airport infrastructure and TSA staffing. Travel advocacy groups are urging Congress to address the systemic issues plaguing the nation's air travel system. They argue that adequate funding is essential to ensure the safety and efficiency of air travel, particularly as passenger numbers continue to rise.

Passengers traveling through San Diego International Airport are advised to check the airport's website for real-time security wait times. They should also factor in additional time for potential delays when planning their travel, allowing at least two hours for domestic flights and three hours for international flights.
