San Diego Airport Hit by Major Security Delays
Locale: UNITED STATES

SAN DIEGO, CA - March 25th, 2026 - San Diego International Airport (SAN) is currently experiencing significant security delays, particularly during peak travel times, leaving passengers frustrated and, in some cases, missing flights. Reports of wait times exceeding 45 minutes, and even surpassing an hour, are becoming increasingly common, raising concerns about the airport's ability to handle the growing influx of travelers.
The issue, initially reported earlier today, stems from a combination of factors, primarily staffing shortages and a consistent surge in passenger volume. Airport spokesperson Kris Daniels confirmed that SAN is actively working to mitigate the problem, urging passengers to arrive at the airport significantly earlier than usual to account for the extended security lines.
However, the situation at San Diego is not isolated. Airports across the nation are facing similar pressures as travel rebounds post-pandemic. While passenger numbers are still below pre-2020 levels in some sectors, the rate of increase is outpacing the ability of airports and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to adequately staff security checkpoints. This imbalance is creating a ripple effect, impacting not only passenger experience but also potentially disrupting flight schedules and airline operations.
The TSA, responsible for screening passengers and baggage, has struggled with recruitment and retention. A report released last month by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) highlighted chronic understaffing within the agency, exacerbated by a lengthy hiring process and competitive wages offered by private security firms. The GAO report warned that these staffing challenges could worsen as the summer travel season approaches, potentially leading to even more significant delays at airports nationwide.
San Diego's peak hours are currently defined as 5:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, coinciding with the busiest departure and arrival windows. The airport is implementing temporary measures to address the immediate problem, including redeploying staff from less critical areas and utilizing overtime hours. However, these are considered short-term solutions. Longer-term strategies include accelerating recruitment efforts, streamlining training programs, and investing in advanced screening technologies.
"We understand the inconvenience these delays are causing, and we are committed to improving the passenger experience," stated Daniels. "We are working closely with the TSA to explore all available options. We're also encouraging passengers to utilize the TSA PreCheck program where eligible; this can significantly reduce wait times."
TSA PreCheck allows pre-approved, low-risk travelers to bypass some of the standard screening procedures, expediting their passage through security. Enrollment in the program requires a background check and a fee, but many frequent travelers find the convenience and time savings worthwhile. The TSA is also exploring the implementation of more automated screening lanes, which can process passengers more efficiently.
The increased wait times at SAN and other airports are prompting calls for greater federal investment in airport infrastructure and TSA staffing. Travel advocacy groups are urging Congress to address the systemic issues plaguing the nation's air travel system. They argue that adequate funding is essential to ensure the safety and efficiency of air travel, particularly as passenger numbers continue to rise.
Passengers traveling through San Diego International Airport are advised to check the airport's website for real-time security wait times. They should also factor in additional time for potential delays when planning their travel, allowing at least two hours for domestic flights and three hours for international flights. While the airport is striving to improve the situation, passengers should prepare for potential disruptions and exercise patience during peak travel periods. The situation serves as a stark reminder that the aviation industry is still recovering from the impacts of the pandemic and faces ongoing challenges in meeting the demands of a resurgent travel market.
