A former nail salon employee in New York, Christina Chapman, has pleaded guilty to participating in a scheme that allowed North Korean IT workers to obtain remote jobs in the U.S. using stolen identities, thereby generating revenue for North Korea and evading U.S. sanctions. Chapman, along with others, facilitated the creation of fake identities and helped manage the logistics, such as laptops and paychecks, for these workers who were based in China and Russia. This operation, which ran from October 2020 to 2023, involved over 300 North Korean IT workers and resulted in the theft of over $6.8 million from more than 300 U.S. companies.
