Last week, less than 40% of Kentuckians eligible for a driver's license have a Real ID. The deadline is May 7.
The deadline for travelers to obtain a Real ID-compliant driver's license or identification card is approaching on May 7, 2025, as announced by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. This requirement, initially set to be enforced in October 2020 but delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, mandates that individuals must have a Real ID to board domestic flights and enter federal facilities. To obtain a Real ID, one must visit a driver's licensing agency with documents proving identity, Social Security number, and two proofs of residency. In Kentucky, the process involves visiting the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's website to schedule an appointment and bringing the necessary documents, including a birth certificate or valid U.S. passport, Social Security card or pay stub, and two proofs of Kentucky residency.
