Federal officials said the increased warning is due to crime, swimming risks and information they gathered on individuals traveling with firearms and ammunition.
The U.S. Department of State has issued a travel alert for the Bahamas, urging travelers to exercise increased caution due to a rise in violent crimes, including 18 murders reported in Nassau since the beginning of 2025. The alert specifically warns against visiting the eastern part of New Providence Island, known as "Over the Hill," due to high crime rates. The advisory also notes an increase in armed robberies, sexual assaults, and burglaries, particularly in vacation rental properties. Travelers are advised to be vigilant, avoid nighttime travel, and not resist if confronted by robbers. The alert comes as the Bahamas remains a popular destination for American tourists, with over 7 million visitors annually.
