South Carolina Enters High Alert for Holiday Travel
Fox CarolinaLocale: UNITED STATES

GREENVILLE, S.C. - February 10, 2026 - South Carolina law enforcement agencies are entering a heightened state of readiness as the holiday travel season officially kicks into high gear. With projections indicating a substantial surge in vehicular traffic, the South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS), along with local sheriff's departments and municipal police forces, are implementing a comprehensive strategy to enhance road safety and mitigate the risk of accidents.
This year's preparations are particularly focused, building on lessons learned from recent years where holiday travel saw significant spikes - in 2025, traffic volume increased by 8.5% over the previous year during the same period. Officials attribute this continued growth to a combination of factors, including improved economic conditions allowing for more discretionary travel, and a general rebound in tourism following pandemic-related restrictions. However, increased volume invariably translates to increased risk, prompting the proactive measures being taken.
SCDPS Director Cory Nesbitt emphasized the core message of the campaign: "Our primary goal is simple: to ensure everyone reaches their destination safely. This isn't just about writing tickets; it's about preventing tragedies. We're asking every driver to prioritize safety and make responsible choices behind the wheel."
The enforcement strategy centers around increased visibility. Expect a significant increase in the number of troopers patrolling major interstates like I-26, I-95, and I-85, as well as secondary highways. Beyond traditional patrol units, SCDPS is deploying specialized units equipped with advanced radar and laser technology to identify and address speeding violations. Furthermore, a network of strategically placed DUI checkpoints will be active across the state. These checkpoints will be publicized in advance via the SCDPS social media channels and local news outlets to serve as a deterrent, but the specific locations will remain flexible to maximize their effectiveness.
"DUI remains a persistent threat," explains Sergeant Amelia Hayes, a spokesperson for the SCDPS. "Despite years of public awareness campaigns, too many drivers still choose to get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol or other impairing substances. Our checkpoints, combined with increased saturation patrols, are designed to remove these dangerous drivers from the roadways."
However, the emphasis isn't solely on reactive enforcement. SCDPS is also actively promoting proactive safety measures. They've launched a multi-faceted public awareness campaign, utilizing television, radio, and social media platforms, to remind drivers of essential safety tips. These include:
- Buckling Up: Seatbelts remain the single most effective safety device in vehicles.
- Eliminating Distractions: Put away cell phones, avoid adjusting radios, and minimize any activity that diverts attention from driving.
- Maintaining Safe Speeds: Adhering to posted speed limits and adjusting speed for weather conditions is crucial.
- Avoiding Impaired Driving: Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Planning Ahead: Allow ample travel time, check traffic conditions before departing, and identify rest areas along the route.
Beyond the core messaging, SCDPS is also partnering with AAA and other travel organizations to provide real-time traffic updates via mobile apps and roadside information boards. This aims to help drivers make informed decisions about route selection and avoid congested areas. The department is also coordinating with neighboring states to share information about traffic patterns and potential hazards.
The increased law enforcement presence is expected to continue through the end of the holiday period. SCDPS officials urge all travelers to exercise caution, be mindful of other drivers, and prioritize safety above all else. Reporting reckless driving behavior to authorities can also contribute to a safer travel experience for everyone. Travelers can find more information and updated traffic conditions on the SCDPS website: https://www.scdps.gov/ .
