The Citadel Names McKenzie Walters as New President
Locale: UNITED STATES

Charleston, SC - March 23, 2026 - The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, today announced McKenzie Walters will assume the presidency, succeeding interim president Linda Knott. The appointment signals a continuation of the college's mission of principled leadership development, but with a fresh perspective drawn from Walters' distinguished career at the U.S. Naval Academy.
Walters, who served as superintendent of the Naval Academy from 2019-2023, will officially begin her tenure in July. The Board of Trustees, led by Chairman Claude M. Sparrow Jr., expressed unwavering confidence in Walters' ability to guide The Citadel into its next phase. Sparrow stated, "McKenzie Walters is the right leader to guide The Citadel into its next chapter. Her experience as superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy and her deep understanding of military-focused institutions make her ideally suited to lead our college."
The selection of Walters comes after a period of transition for the Charleston-based institution. Linda Knott stepped into the interim role in July 2023 following the resignation of former President Andrew Kling. While details surrounding Kling's departure remain relatively sparse, the appointment of a permanent president with Walters' profile indicates the college is eager to project stability and a clear vision for the future.
Walters' previous role at the Naval Academy provides a compelling backdrop to her appointment. The Naval Academy, like The Citadel, focuses on developing future leaders through a rigorous academic and military curriculum. Her experience in managing a similarly structured institution will be invaluable as she navigates the unique challenges and opportunities presented by The Citadel. Observers note that the increasing complexity of global security threats and the evolving nature of leadership demand a leader with a strong foundation in both military strategy and contemporary educational practices - qualities Walters demonstrably possesses.
Beyond the strategic similarities between the two institutions, Walters' return to Charleston holds personal significance. Having previously lived in the area, she brings not only professional expertise but also a pre-existing connection to the local community. This is seen as a key asset in strengthening the college's ties with the city and fostering deeper engagement with alumni and stakeholders.
The search committee emphasized Walters' commitment to several core values as decisive factors in their selection. Specifically, her track record of fostering academic excellence, promoting diversity, and bolstering community engagement were highlighted. The Citadel, while steeped in tradition, has increasingly focused on attracting a more diverse student body and embracing innovative pedagogical approaches. Walters is expected to accelerate these efforts, ensuring the college remains relevant and competitive in the 21st century.
In her statement, Walters expressed enthusiasm for her new role: "I am honored and excited to join The Citadel family. I'm eager to work with the cadets, faculty, staff and alumni to continue the college's mission of developing principled leaders." This commitment to collaboration suggests a leadership style focused on inclusivity and shared governance.
Prior to her tenure at the Naval Academy, Walters held various leadership positions within the Department of Defense and the Marine Corps, further solidifying her extensive experience in national security and military affairs. While details of those roles haven't been fully publicized, it's clear that Walters boasts a deep understanding of the operational demands placed on future military leaders, as well as the evolving skillset needed to succeed in those roles.
Looking ahead, Walters faces several key challenges. Maintaining The Citadel's rigorous academic standards while fostering a more inclusive and diverse environment will require careful navigation. Further strengthening relationships with the local community and alumni network will also be crucial. However, given her background and the Board of Trustees' confidence, Walters appears well-equipped to meet these challenges and lead The Citadel toward continued success in a rapidly changing world. The coming months will be critical as she develops a strategic vision for the college and begins implementing initiatives to ensure The Citadel remains a premier leadership institution for generations to come.
