  • WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The U.S. State Department said on Monday that it was imposing visa restrictions on owners and other staff at India-based travel agencies that it says knowingly facilitate illegal migration to the United States. An unspecified number of unnamed people linked to travel agencies in India were being hit with visa bans under the Immigration and Nationality Act based on information gathered by the U.S. mission to India, department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said in a statement.

The U.S. has imposed visa bans on certain Indian individuals due to their involvement in undermining the democratic process during India's most recent national elections, as announced by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken. This action targets individuals believed to have been responsible for or complicit in voter intimidation and manipulation of vote tabulation. The decision reflects the U.S. commitment to supporting democratic institutions and human rights globally, and it underscores the ongoing tensions between the U.S. and India over democratic practices. The visa restrictions are part of a broader U.S. policy to address and penalize actions that threaten democratic elections worldwide.
