After Trump administration lifts stop-work order
In May 2025, Norwegian energy giant Equinor announced the restart of its Empire Wind 2 offshore wind project off the coast of New York, following a temporary halt due to a stop-work order issued by former President Donald Trump in 2024. The project, which had been stalled for over a year, is now set to resume construction with an expected completion date in 2027. Equinor's decision to move forward comes amidst a renewed focus on renewable energy under the current administration, which has prioritized the development of offshore wind farms as part of its climate change initiatives. The restart of Empire Wind 2 is seen as a significant step towards meeting New York's goal of generating 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
