The Trump administration in February directed states to stop spending money for EV charging infrastructure that was allocated under President Joe Biden.

In May 2025, a coalition of 17 states, led by California and New York, filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration for blocking billions of dollars in federal funding intended for the expansion of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. The lawsuit claims that the administration's decision to halt the funding, which was part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, is unlawful and detrimental to the states' efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainable transportation. The states argue that the move not only undermines their environmental goals but also hampers economic growth and job creation in the burgeoning EV sector. The blocked funds were meant to support the installation of 500,000 EV chargers nationwide by 2030, a critical component of the national strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
