This East Asian country has joined a global initiative to create tourist taxes to combat overtourism.

Japan has introduced a new tourist tax aimed at addressing the issue of overtourism, which has been straining the country's popular destinations and infrastructure. Starting April 1, 2025, international visitors will be charged a fee of ¥1,000 (approximately $6.50) upon entering the country. The revenue generated from this tax will be used to improve tourism facilities, protect cultural sites, and enhance the overall visitor experience. The move comes as Japan sees a surge in tourist numbers post-COVID, with cities like Kyoto and Tokyo experiencing overcrowding. Local authorities hope that the tax will help manage the influx of tourists more sustainably while preserving Japan's unique attractions for future generations.
