The administration clarified what counts as REAL ID in a social media post, after the act was implemented last month.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has clarified that a Costco membership card is not an acceptable form of identification for air travel, despite a viral social media post suggesting otherwise. The post, which circulated on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), claimed that a Costco card could be used as a REAL ID, leading to confusion among travelers. The TSA emphasized that only valid government-issued identification, such as a driver's license or passport, will be accepted at airport security checkpoints. This clarification comes as the deadline for REAL ID compliance approaches, set for May 7, 2025, after which travelers will need a REAL ID or a passport to board domestic flights.
