REAL ID is now required for air travel in America. Here's what's happening at airports across the US

  • The time has come. Starting Wednesday, passengers nationwide must a use state-issued ID or license that is "REAL ID" complaint to travel within the US.

Starting May 7, 2025, travelers in the United States will need a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or another acceptable form of identification to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities, as mandated by the Department of Homeland Security. This requirement, stemming from the REAL ID Act passed by Congress in 2005, aims to enhance security by setting standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards. The deadline, previously postponed multiple times due to various reasons including the COVID-19 pandemic, has been firmly set for May 2025, giving states and residents ample time to comply. Individuals can check if their current ID is REAL ID-compliant by looking for a star or a specific marking on their license, and those needing to obtain a REAL ID can do so by visiting their state's motor vehicle department with the required documentation.
