The man-versus-machine competition was presented as a showcase for China's ambition in areas from AI to robotics to semiconductors.
In a marathon held in Beijing, China, two robots named "Dian Dian" and "Xiao Pang" participated in what was billed as the world's first robot marathon, aiming to complete a 100-lap race around a 400-meter track. The event, however, turned chaotic as the robots faced numerous technical difficulties; one robot tripped and fell, another emitted smoke and caught fire, and several others broke down or lost parts during the race. Ultimately, only five out of the original 16 robots managed to finish the marathon, highlighting the significant challenges and limitations of current robotic technology in such demanding physical tasks.
