Ohio's hotels experience staffing shortages, but locally, things aren't as bad as they seem

Job opportunities coupled with higher wages, shift flexibility and better benefits have helped resolve the employment issues locally.

Ohio's hotel industry is grappling with staffing shortages, a situation exacerbated by the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to a significant reduction in the workforce as many employees left the industry. However, the situation varies across different regions, with Northeast Ohio experiencing less severe shortages compared to other parts of the state. Local hotels like the Holiday Inn in Independence and the Metropolitan at the 9 in Cleveland have managed to maintain adequate staffing levels, with the former even reporting being fully staffed. Despite these local successes, the broader challenge of staffing remains, with the Ohio Hotel & Lodging Association noting that the industry is still down about 20% in employment from pre-COVID levels. Efforts to attract new workers include offering higher wages, flexible schedules, and sign-on bonuses, but the recovery to full staffing levels remains a slow process.
