  • WASHINGTON/CARACAS (Reuters) -The United States and Venezuela on Tuesday each warned their respective citizens against traveling to the other country, with the U.S. citing the risk of wrongful detention in the South American nation and Venezuela saying its citizens are victims of systematic rights abuses in the U.S. "U.S. citizens in Venezuela face a significant and growing risk of wrongful detention," the State Department said in a statement. The department has assigned Venezuela, where there is no U.S. Embassy or consulate, its highest alert - Level 4: Do Not .

The U.S. and Venezuelan governments have issued warnings to their citizens about traveling to each other's countries amid heightened tensions. The U.S. State Department advised Americans to "strongly reconsider" travel to Venezuela due to crime, political instability, and the potential for arbitrary arrest and detention of U.S. citizens. Meanwhile, Venezuela's Foreign Ministry cautioned its citizens against traveling to the U.S., citing racism, police brutality, and the risk of being detained or deported. These reciprocal travel warnings come as relations between the two nations continue to deteriorate, with the U.S. imposing sanctions on Venezuela over its political situation and Venezuela accusing the U.S. of meddling in its internal affairs.
