  • Crime, civil unrest, kidnapping and terrorism are all dangers at a popular South American destination, according to a recent U.S. travel advisory.

U.S. officials have issued a travel alert for Americans planning to visit the Bahamas due to a spike in violent crimes, including 18 murders in Nassau since the beginning of 2024. The alert advises travelers to exercise extreme caution, particularly in the eastern part of New Providence Island, and to avoid areas known for gang violence. The U.S. Embassy in Nassau has noted that the majority of these crimes are gang-related, but tourists have also been affected. The alert comes in response to recent incidents, including the murder of a 29-year-old woman on a cruise ship in Nassau. The U.S. State Department recommends that travelers remain vigilant, avoid nighttime travel, and keep a low profile to minimize risks.
