  • New U.S. travel warning tells citizens to leave Venezuela immediately, citing detention risks.

The U.S. State Department has issued a Level 4 travel advisory, the highest level, urging Americans not to travel to Venezuela due to ongoing political instability, crime, and the threat of wrongful detention or kidnapping. The advisory highlights the risks of civil unrest, terrorism, and arbitrary enforcement of local laws, with U.S. citizens facing potential detention without consular assistance. The advisory also notes the limited ability of the U.S. government to provide emergency services to its citizens in Venezuela, exacerbated by the closure of the U.S. Embassy in Caracas in March 2019. Additionally, the advisory warns of the dangers posed by transnational crime and the country's economic instability, urging U.S. citizens currently in Venezuela to depart as soon as it is safe to do so.
