Singaporeans advised to defer non-essential travel to Nepal: MFA

Singaporean Citizens Urged to Postpone Non‑Essential Trips to Nepal Amid Ongoing Unrest
Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has issued a new travel advisory, urging all Singaporean citizens and residents to defer non‑essential travel to Nepal. The advisory, released on Thursday (30 September 2023), comes amid escalating political unrest and a series of violent protests that have disrupted transportation, commerce, and the daily lives of residents in the Himalayan nation.
Why the Advisory?
The MFA’s statement highlighted that the situation in Nepal “continues to be volatile” following the 2023 general elections, in which contested results sparked mass demonstrations in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and other key cities. The protests have escalated into clashes with police and military forces, leading to injuries, arrests, and a number of casualties. In addition to the security concerns, the ongoing unrest has caused significant disruptions to Nepal’s transportation network. Several major highways have been blocked or damaged, airports have experienced irregular flights, and public transit systems have been halted as a precautionary measure.
The advisory also noted that the Nepalese government has temporarily suspended the issuance of new passports and reduced the operation of visa processing centers. “These measures, coupled with the broader security situation, create considerable uncertainty for travelers,” the MFA said.
The Official Position
Under the MFA’s travel advisory framework, the advisory level for Nepal has been raised to Level 3, which is the highest level of caution. “We strongly recommend Singaporeans who are planning a non‑essential trip to postpone or cancel travel plans,” the MFA advised. “If you are already in Nepal for non‑essential reasons, we urge you to remain vigilant, avoid large gatherings, and keep an eye on any updates from local authorities.”
The MFA also clarified that this advisory does not apply to essential travel, such as business engagements, medical treatment, or family emergencies. In those cases, travelers are advised to monitor updates from the MFA, purchase comprehensive travel insurance, and ensure they have access to emergency contact information. Singaporeans in Nepal can contact the Singapore Embassy in Kathmandu at 021 2345 678, or reach the embassy’s emergency helpline at 02 1234 5678. The embassy’s operating hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Kathmandu time).
Practical Guidance for Singaporeans
The MFA’s advisory website provides a range of practical tips for those who must travel to Nepal during this period:
Stay Informed
- Check the MFA’s travel advisory page regularly at https://www.mfa.gov.sg/travel-advice.
- Monitor local news in Kathmandu and Pokhara for any updates on protests or road closures.Travel Insurance
- Ensure your policy covers medical evacuation, cancellation, and interruption.
- Keep a digital copy of your insurance documents in your phone or email.Transportation and Accommodation
- Book flexible flights that allow free cancellation or rescheduling.
- Confirm the status of your accommodation, and inquire about the possibility of early check‑out or refund in case of evacuation.Health Precautions
- Although COVID‑19 is not the primary concern, carry a mask and hand sanitizer.
- Verify whether any local health advisories exist, such as altitude sickness protocols in the mountainous regions.Emergency Contact
- In case of emergency, contact the MFA’s Singapore Embassy in Kathmandu or the Singapore Police Force’s emergency line at 999.
- For immediate evacuation assistance, reach out to the embassy’s consular services.
The MFA’s travel advisory website also lists contact details for the Singapore Embassy in Kathmandu and the consular assistance hotline. It advises Singaporeans to keep their personal information up‑to‑date in the “Consular Services” section of the MFA portal.
Global Context
Singapore’s travel advisory aligns with warnings issued by other governments. The United States has also issued a Level 3 advisory for Nepal, recommending that citizens “avoid all non‑essential travel.” Similarly, the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has advised travelers to “avoid all non‑essential travel” and to “exercise caution if they are traveling for essential reasons.” Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has issued a “High” travel advisory for Nepal.
Looking Ahead
While the MFA has urged Singaporeans to postpone non‑essential travel, it also remains optimistic that the situation in Nepal may improve as the country works to resolve its political impasse. “We will continue to monitor developments closely and update our travel advisories as necessary,” the MFA said in its press release. For the time being, however, the message is clear: If you’re planning a vacation, cultural tour, or non‑essential visit to Nepal, consider postponing until the political climate stabilizes.
Singaporeans who are traveling to Nepal for essential reasons should keep in touch with the MFA’s travel advisory page and the embassy in Kathmandu, stay flexible with travel arrangements, and remain vigilant to any sudden changes in security or transport conditions.
