A REAL ID or a passport are now required to fly in the United States but the Transportation Security Administration is giving some leeway as the requirement is implemented.
The REAL ID deadline, initially set for May 3, 2023, has been postponed to May 7, 2025, due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, as announced by the Department of Homeland Security. This extension aims to give states more time to ensure compliance with the REAL ID Act, which mandates that driver's licenses and identification cards meet federal standards for domestic air travel and access to federal facilities. The delay acknowledges the challenges states faced in processing REAL ID applications amidst the health crisis, and it provides additional time for residents to obtain compliant identification.
