Royal Caribbean said it acted "Out of an abundance of caution."
Several cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean and Carnival, have canceled their stops in Labadee, Haiti, following a U.S. State Department travel advisory warning of potential dangers due to escalating gang violence and kidnappings in the country. The advisory, issued on July 27, 2023, raised the travel alert to Level 4, urging U.S. citizens to avoid travel to Haiti. The decision to cancel port calls was made to ensure the safety of passengers and crew, with Royal Caribbean stating they are closely monitoring the situation and will adjust their plans accordingly. This comes amidst a backdrop of increasing instability in Haiti, with over 2,400 people reported killed, injured, or kidnapped in the first half of 2023 alone.
