BEIJING/SHANGHAI (Reuters) -Trip numbers are set to reach a three-year post-COVID high during China's upcoming May Day public holidays, travel firms say. Domestic travel in China has boomed since the end of the country's pandemic-era restrictions, but while more people are taking a holiday many are keeping a tight rein on spending amid an economic slowdown and concern about employment and wage stagnation. Liu Xiaoting, a 32-year-old bank employee, plans to to Hebei, a province close to her home in Beijing.

The article from Yahoo News discusses the expected surge in travel during China's upcoming Labor Day holiday, which spans from May 1st to May 5th. This year's holiday is anticipated to see a significant increase in domestic travel, with an estimated 240 million trips, marking a 150% rise from the previous year. The increase is attributed to the relaxation of China's stringent COVID-19 restrictions, allowing more freedom of movement. Popular destinations include Beijing, Shanghai, and Sanya, with a notable trend towards outdoor and nature-based activities. The surge in travel is also expected to boost the tourism and hospitality sectors, which have been severely impacted by the prolonged restrictions.
