Michiganders can still obtain a Real ID after the May 7 deadline.
The Michigan REAL ID is a federally compliant form of identification that residents will need to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities starting May 7, 2025. To obtain a REAL ID, individuals must visit a Secretary of State office with original documents proving their identity, Social Security number, and Michigan residency. Acceptable documents include a valid U.S. passport, birth certificate, Social Security card, or W-2 form, and two proofs of Michigan residency like utility bills or bank statements. The REAL ID, marked with a gold star in the upper right corner, can be obtained for free if the applicant already has a valid license or ID, but standard fees apply for renewals or replacements. It's recommended to apply early to avoid last-minute rushes as the deadline approaches.
