The dispute relates to council workers in female-dominated roles, such as cleaners and catering staff, historically being paid less than those in male-dominated roles, like waste collection - leaving the council with £760m of liabilities.

Birmingham City Council has reached a historic agreement with the GMB and Unite unions to resolve equal pay claims, potentially saving the council from financial ruin. The agreement, which was approved by the council's cabinet, aims to address the ongoing issue of equal pay, where female-dominated jobs were found to be underpaid compared to male-dominated roles. This deal includes a new job evaluation scheme to ensure fair pay and prevent future claims, with an estimated cost of £760m to £1.15bn to settle existing claims. The council leader, John Cotton, emphasized the importance of this resolution for the city's financial stability and the well-being of its workforce, marking a significant step towards rectifying long-standing pay inequalities.
